‘Mithila Makhaan’ is an emotional and thrilling journey of Kranti Prakash who fights for establishing his grandfather’s Makhaana (an indian agro food product) company which was closed-down 35 years ago in flood-stricken area of India-Nepal border, along the river Kosi.
Kranti, age 34 works in a company in Toronto and comes to his village in Bihar after 23 years. In his short trip of one week, he has to perform a small family ritual/ puja. The village of his memories is no more the same, the place is marred with migration, corruption and apathy from all the quarters. Meanwhile he finds out that his grandfather used to be a Makhaana farmer in 1970s and his murder was the cause of migration of the rest of the family.
After four days in village, his life changes forever. Kranti reaches Mumbai Airport to catch his outbound flight but sudden surge of emotion and dramatic turnouts didn’t let him go and he comes back to village. He vows to start Mithila Makhaan Pvt. Ltd. once again, but the road to this entrepreneurial venture in hinterlands of Bihar is not easy. In his pursuit to start Mithila Makhaan Pvt. Ltd., he fights against odds, especially the Makhana Mafia Brahma Singh.
Lord Ram was married to princess Sita of Mithila. This geographical region of modern day Indo-Nepal border continues to preserve its unique identity till date. Makhaan is the local agro-produce of this region, which is nothing less than a wonder food item. It is also known as foxnut.
The title of movie ‘Mithila Makhaan’ is to highlight the problem of migrant worker of maithali region as it shows the challenges faced by protagonist in setting up a business of Makhaana production in his ancestral place.
‘Mithila Makhaan’ film is a product of collaboration between Champaran Talkies and Samir Kumar. Main inspiration behind the film has been the volunteer rescue efforts from various non-resident Biharis ( in India and abroad) during 2008 devastating flooding of the region.

‘Mithila Makhaan’ was shot in India, Nepal, Canada & USA. Majority of shoot was in Taralahi, Panchobh and Banauli villeges of Mithila. Other places in India are Darbhanga, Rajnagar in Madhubani, Katihar Highway & locations in Patna and Mumbai. Kosi bridge in Nepal; Richmond Hills, NYC Downtown, Niagara Falls and Toronto Downtown are the international locations where this film has been shot.
In the sorry state of affairs, lads from UP and Bihar have to move out of their native places in search of a glorified job. Similarly, with no apt film industry in regions of UP and Bihar, talented actors like Sushant Singh Rajput had to move to Mumbai to get recognition. Had there been enough opportunities like Tollywood, Kollywood etc where heroes like Rajnikant have cult like following and movies like Bahubali having worldwide success, there would not have been need for youths like Sushant to move out without a safety net.
